About the Foundation

The St. Botolph Club Foundation was established in 1967 to recognize and support artists (visual arts, music, literature) working in or associated with New England and is referred to as the Cultural Fund. In 2014 a second fund, The Heritage Fund, was added to the Foundation. Its focus is the preservation of the McKim, Mead and White clubhouse and the preservation of the club’s art collection. The non-profit organization (501c3) is supported by the generous contributions of members and friends of the St. Botolph Club.

The Foundation’s Distinguished Artist Award is presented annually to an artist who has demonstrated outstanding talent and an exceptional diversity of accomplishments. In addition to being distinguished as artists (sometimes in several disciplines), award recipients have made substantial contributions as teachers, mentors or advocates. Recent recipients of this award include Gregory Crewdson (Photography), EO Wilson (Nonfiction in Socio-biology), Peter Sykes (Keyboard Performance), Ellen Driscoll (Sculpture), Jean Carroon (Preservation Architecture), M.T. Anderson (Literature), David Sutherland (Documentary Film), The Borromeo String Quartet (Musical Performance), Gail Mazur (Poetry), Alan Lightman (Physics & Literature), Anne Azéma (Musical Direction of an Ensemble), Danielle Abrams (Performance Art), & Afaa Micheal Weaver (Poetry).

Over the past 40 years, the Foundation has made Emerging Artist grants to artists at an earlier stage in their careers. The Foundation seeks out situations where it can “make a difference” through the combination of financial support, recognition, and encouragement. Through this program the Foundation supports well-defined endeavors such as finishing a commissioned score, preparing works for an exhibition, traveling for arts research or completing a piece of literature. The Foundation has provided support to more that 610 emerging artists in New England.

The art collection of the St. Botolph Club may be viewed by the public on Wednesdays from 2 P.M. – 4 P.M.
